How TopCustomSong Tests & Ranks

We test every service we recommend, score on the same criteria across the field, refresh rankings monthly as the services update, and disclose our partner relationships up front.

How we test

For each service in the ranking, we run the same five real-world prompts: a birthday gift song for a parent, a wedding first-dance song, a kid's lullaby, an anniversary song, and a small-business jingle. Same input, same expectations, scored against the same rubric. We generate at least three songs per prompt on each service, listen to all of them end-to-end, and rate the output on the criteria below.

We also walk every service's checkout, refund, and licensing flow end-to-end so we can describe what actually happens when you buy — not just what the marketing page promises.

What we score on

Every service gets a 0–10 score across four weighted criteria:

CriterionWeightWhat we're measuring
Audio quality35%Vocal naturalness, mix balance, production polish. Listen on headphones, not phone speakers.
Personalization25%How well the lyrics actually reference the specifics you provide — names, inside jokes, moments — vs. generic placeholder language.
Speed & reliability20%End-to-end time from prompt to downloadable song, plus consistency across multiple runs.
Value & policies20%Price per song relative to quality, licensing terms, refund/revision policy, hidden fees.

The weighted scores roll up to the overall score shown on each review card. A service that wins on audio but loses on personalization is treated differently from one that does the opposite, depending on the use case the page covers.

Partner relationships & disclosure

TopCustomSong is an affiliate-supported review site. When you click through to a service from one of our pages and purchase, we may earn a referral commission from that service. This is how we fund the testing and the site itself.

What this changes: nothing about rankings or scoring. Commission rates do not factor into our 0–10 scores or which service we put at the top of a list. We rank on the rubric above, not on what pays us most.

What it does change: which services we have an affiliate relationship with at all. Services that don't operate an affiliate program can still appear in our reviews if they're competitive — we just don't earn anything from those clicks. Currently we have affiliate or partner relationships with JoyBox, SmileTunes, AnyMusic, and Custom Song Gift. Suno is included as a non-paid editorial reference; we recommend their free tier where appropriate.

Our outbound affiliate links carry rel="sponsored" per Google's webmaster guidelines so the relationship is machine-readable.

How often we refresh

Rankings, pricing, and feature notes are reviewed at least monthly. AI music services ship new models and pricing changes faster than most affiliate categories, so a six-month-old review goes stale quickly. The "Last updated" date in each article byline reflects the most recent editorial pass on that specific page.

When a service ships a model upgrade (Suno v5.5, JoyBox refreshes, etc.) we re-run the relevant prompts and update scores within two weeks.
